Las Vegas based Circa Sports has become one of the most influential sportsbooks in Nevada in just a few years of operation. They now run five retail locations in Southern Nevada, and are slated to open their first retail sportsbook in Northern Nevada at the Legends Bay Casino in Sparks later this summer. They’ve also started to expand outside of the Silver State, offering mobile sports betting in Colorado and Iowa.
Circa has recently made a move to further establish themselves as an industry leader. They’ve hired a couple of iconic ‘old school’ Las Vegas bookmakers in Richie Baccellieri and Nick Bogdanovich. The names might not be known to the mainstream sports media newcomers or Wall Street investment types, but both are highly respected by the Southern Nevada sports betting community. Baccellieri is a former sportsbook director at Caesars Palace, MGM Grand and The Palms. He’s joined Circa as their director of product development.
Bogdanovich is now Circa sportsbook manager–his first gig nine months after he was fired by Caesars Sportsbook. He was the vice president of trading at Caesars after coming over when the company purchased bookmaker William Hill. Bogdanovich was William Hill sportsbook director since 2012 and has previously run the sportsbook at Stratosphere, Mandalay Bay and the Golden Nugget. Bogdanovich wasn’t looking for a new opportunity when he was contacted by Circa sportsbook director Matt Metcalf:
“I respect what Derek’s (Circa owner Derek Stevens) done with the sports, and I have the utmost respect for Matt. I chewed on it for a while and decided that would be a good place to make a reappearance.”
Bogdanovich says that he’s a good fit with Circa’s team and bookmaking philosophy:
“Matt just wanted another bat in the lineup. I’m looking forward to working with those guys. I agree with their philosophy, and I like the guys they’ve got down there running it right now. It seems like a pretty good fit.”
Sportsbook director Metcalf says that Circa wants to have the ‘best bookmaking team in the world’:
“Our goal is to put together the best bookmaking team in the world. When we have the opportunity to hire what I perceive to be some of the best bookmakers in the world in Chris Bennett, Jeff Davis and Nick, we jump at those opportunities.”
“Nick has been known throughout his career as someone who takes the largest bets and tries to get players down. He’ll bring that same attitude to Circa Sports, and we’re excited to see how it goes.”
Good move by Circa. Too many companies in the new world of legal US sports betting have forgotten that their job is to take bets. Circa is an exception, and with Bogdanovich and Baccellieri they’ve got a couple of people that know how to do sports betting right.
