Retail sports betting is now live in Puerto Rico and no surprise that Caesars Sportsbook isn’t far behind. The sports betting division of Caesars Entertainment has announced the opening of a retail betting operation at San Juan’s Casino Metro. The new sportsbook is called ”MetroBets with Caesars Sportsbook’ and from the sound of it is going to be a temporary setup while Casino Metro completes a major expansion of the gaming area.
Currently, the sportsbook has three betting windows and 12 self service kiosks, along with more than 25 LED TVs and odds boards. The sportsbook is located in a ‘newly rennovated space’, but it’s hard to see them not expanding it when Casino Metro completes the expansion that will add more than 7,000 square feet to the gaming area. The expansion is slated to be finished in the second quarter of 2023.

Ceasars has ambitious plans in Puerto Rico. The press release indicates a planned launch of the Caesars Sportsbook mobile app in 2023, as always ‘subject to regulatory approvals’. Then there’s this interesting bit:
After initially launching retail sports betting at Casino Metro, MetroBets with Caesars Sportsbook plans to expand to other satellite wagering locations in local businesses throughout the commonwealth, as permitted by Puerto Rico law, reaching a diverse customer base.
Ismael Vega, General Manager of Casino Metro, offered this quote about his property’s new sportsbook:
“We are proud to launch the “MetroBets with Caesars Sportsbook” brand, at Casino Metro, generating more than 30 new jobs for our workforce. The foray into the world of sports betting is a natural step for our operation, which has been characterized by constant innovation. Due to its complexity, as usual, we were immersed in a process of analysis and preparation to achieve it and we are proud to achieve this alliance with a giant like Caesars.”
Eric Hession, President of Caesars Digital, returned the props:
“As we pursued sports betting in Puerto Rico under its unique framework, we wanted to align with the best possible partner that would provide deep, localized knowledge of the market,” said Eric Hession, President of Caesars Digital. “We found that partner in Casino Metro, which has a strong brand and customer base in the Puerto Rico market.”
Best of luck to Caesars and Casino Metro on the new venture. It sounds like the Puerto Rican regulators aren’t adverse to trying some new things with their sports betting ecosystem and that’s always a positive development.
