The Oilers comeback last year fell one game short but oddsmakers feel Edmonton will climb the mountain in 2025 and finally win the Stanley Cup. But can the Panthers go back-to-back and a third straight appearance in the Finals? Let’s break down some of the teams that could challenge for Lord Stanley’s Cup.
Edmonton Oilers +750
The off-season included locking up Leon Draisaitl to an 8-year extension and now two of the best players on the planet look to make amends from last year. Connor McDavid and Draisaitl should put up 100-plus points this season and challenge for individual awards but the big prize is the only one that matters. The Oilers added depth to the top six acquiring Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson to bolster the top two lines. Adam Henrique resigned and Stuart Skinner will be the starter between the pipes. Anything less than a return to the Finals would be considered a failure.
Florida Panthers +900
It’s always hard to repeat as champions but the Panthers roster didn’t undergo any big changes and still are deep enough to reach the Finals for a third straight year. New additions include defensemen Nate Schmidt, and Adam Boqvist, who was the eighth pick in 2018. Defenseman Brandon Montour, Vladimir Tarasenko, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson all left in free agency.Schedule could be an issue though, the Panthers will play in Finland as part of the 2024 NHL Global Series and then have multiple players in the 2025 4-Nations Face-Off. Florida is still one of the deepest teams in the NHL.
New Jersey Devils +1000
Big expectations in New Jersey after they finally addressed the goaltending situation by trading for Jacob Markstrom. Last season the club was ravaged by injuries and missed the playoffs. But Jack Hughes and Timo Meier are healthy again and so is defenseman Dougie Hamilton. The Devils are built to compete and go deep in the playoffs, let’s see if that happens in 2025.
Nashville Predators +1600
The Preds made a big splash in the offseason bringing championship pedigree. Nashville signed Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault to big deals and also added Brady Skjei and former Conn Smythe winner, Ryan O’Reilly and a two-time Stanley Cup champion, Luke Schenn. The experience is there and a team that made a late season run in 2024 could surprise and make a deeper run in 2025.
