The Falcons controlled their own playoff destiny but that changed after last week’s OT loss to the Commanders. Now Atlanta needs help from New Orleans to upset Tampa but first things first, the Falcons need to beat the lowly Panthers at home.
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers started the season winning just one of their first eight games. Since then, they’ve picked up wins against the Saints, Giants and Cardinals. Last week, Carolina trailed Tampa 27-14 at half but got blown out the rest of the way as the Bucs crushed the Panthers 48-14. Bryce Young finished with 203 yards and two touchdowns, while Adam Thielen had five receptions 110 yards and two scores. Carolina averages just 18.6 PPG while allowing 31 PPG, the most in the NFL. Still, the Panthers have been able to keep some of their recent games close, as 6 of their last eight games have been decided by 6 points or less. At 4-12, Carolina currently has the sixth pick in next year’s draft, a loss coupled with some help, could move the Panthers into the top-3.
Atlanta Falcons
For the Falcons, it’s plain and simple, win or the season is over. Atlanta led 17-7 vs Washington but were outscored in the second half 17-7 before losing in overtime. QB Michael Penix finished with 223 yards, one TD and one interception. Bijan Robinson led the rush with his 17 carries for 90 yards and two touchdowns, while Drake London added seven receptions for 106 yards. The run game will be important in this one as the Falcons found success on the ground vs Carolina earlier this season when they racked up 198 yards, and 3 TDs in a 38-20 win.
Best Bet Prediction: Falcons -8
While the spread is large, you have to go with the desperate team. We could see the Panthers sit Bryce Young later in the game to avoid injury, while Atlanta will try to put on the full court press. Success in their meeting will help as the Falcons did score 38 points on this defense. Bottom line for the Dirty Birds, they have to win and pray for some help to get into the playoffs. They’re motivated and should find enough to cover this spread.
