Commanders Look for Another Upset Against Lions in Divisional Round

After pulling off an upset in Tampa Bay now the Commanders are set to meet the Detroit Lions in the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs. The Lions, the top seed, had the luxury of having the week off and now face an upstart Washington team coming off its first playoff win since 2005.

Washington Commanders

Jayden Daniels and Dan Quinn have turned around the fortunes for the Commanders as they head to the divisional round after going 4-13 last season. The rookie quarterback is poised to be named Offensive Rookie of the Year but has bigger goals in mind. He was 24-for-35, 268 yards and two TDs vs Tampa Bay and now faces a Lions defense that has been plagued by injuries this season. Defensively, the Commanders have been improving late in the season but lack playmakers and talent with veterans Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu leading the way. They have their work cut out stopping the highest scoring team in the NFL.

Detroit Lions

It’s been a ‘Super Bowl or Bust’ theme for the Lions and have reeled off 11 straight wins mid season before going on to clinch top spot in the NFC. The offense has been led by OC Ben Johnson who took Jared Goff’s game to another level. This team has outstanding blocking with an elite run game featuring Jahmyr Gibbs (David Montgomery is expected back soon). The receiving corps has been lethal with Jameson Williams turning into a solid WR2 alongside Amon-Ra St. Brown. Defensively, Detroit was near the top but have fallen down the stretch due to injuries. But with the firepower on offense, the defense just needs to do enough, and will take on a tired Commanders squad.

Prediction: Under 55.5

This number just seems way too high for a playoff game, and the last time we saw the Lions at home, in Week 18, in a ‘playoff’ matchup vs the Vikings, the total was 56.5 and ended 30-9. This is the highest total for Washington this season and the Commanders went UNDER vs Tampa Bay (51.5). While both teams have offensive power, the defenses have been playing really well too. If the Lions do jump out to a big lead, they will look to slow the pace, run the ball and eat the clock.

Bonus Best Bet: Lions -6.5 First Half

The Commanders are coming off that emotional road win against the Bucs and playing their third straight road game. The Lions love to strike early and have excelled in the first half under Dan Campbell. This season, Detroit was 13-4 ATS in the first half and 39-14-1 over the last three seasons. Another note, the Lions are a perfect 4-0 ATS when the first half line has been -6.5 or higher.
