No eliminations this week on a somewhat bizarre Disney themed night. It wasn’t the dancing that was strange it was the mawkish emotional blubbering by several contestants. You know how political candidates all have to pretend to be upstanding church going family men and women? Everyone knows that it’s a subterfuge–a thin veneer of ersatz societal ‘decency’ covering up the sleaze, megalomania and psychopathic tendencies that exist in anyone who wants to tell others how to live backed up by the implicit/explicit threat of violence and imprisonment.
That’s how Episode 5 Dancing With The Stars came off. Contestants were tripping over themselves (metaphorically speaking) trying to act like the Disney songs and a trip to Disneyland in SoCal tugged at the heart strings to the point that they could barely function. It got to the point that it was almost uncomfortable to watch, like a psychologically unhinged grandparent blubbering uncontrollably over the death of a relative. At the same time, there was a vibe that it was all completely disingenuous. You would think that the Walt Disney Company owned the ABC television network or something and that they were co-opting their long running reality TV show into a de facto infomercial for their brand and theme park…uh….wait….
Ally Brooke pulled down a 27, the highest score of the week and the highest score of the season to date. Three other contestants also earned 9’s. Still no 10 scores which is a great opportunity for a callback to this observation from last week:
Either the judging is tougher this year, the field is less talented or some combination thereof. Not only have there been no ’10’ scores awarded this season there haven’t been any ‘9’ scores either. In Week 4, the top four contestants had 8’s across the board for 32 points and one point back was Sailor Brinkley who had 31 with three 8’s and a 7. By way of contrast, in Season 27 there were seven ‘9’s’ awarded in Week 2 with the first ’10’ score awarded in Week 3. There is a bit of a technicality as last season’s Week 2 was a special two hour episode. Even if you take that into account and measure this year’s Week 4 against last year’s Week 3 there’s still a huge disparity. By the end of Episode 3 of Season 27 there were not only 3 ’10’ scores awarded but a total of *25* ‘9’ scores.
Obviously, the judges knew that no eliminations were forthcoming and it sure looks like they went easy on the hapless contestants as a result. The top 7 contestants were all within four points of each other. Sean Spicer brought up the rear with Karamo Brown dropping the second lowest score. Karamo was one of the most egregious offenders in the ’emotional manipulation’ category:
“I’m not a dancer but I’ve been enjoying this process so much. As a father, watching The Lion King you start to wonder what your kids can be going through and the pressures that they’re under. You want them to be good and know that they can be king one day. I didn’t have the best relationship with my father so I always wanted to be a great father to my sons. My sons are my world so I’m dedicating this song to let them know that they’re great.”
Calm down, Karamo. It’s not like you’re dancing to a song from a really meaningful movie like Nobody Rides for Free by Ratt from the soundtrack of the classic film Point Break. After his dance, Karamo started blubbering like a fool:
“Seeing my babies who I love so much got me going. Literally, tears were streaming down my face that entire time.”
Figuring he could use all the help he can get, Sean Spicer upped the maudlin quotient by dedicating his dance to his dad who died of cancer. That’s horrible and all but his comments sounded like a Disney public relations shill wrote them:
“In 2015, my father got sick with cancer and we wanted to bring the whole family together to have that Disney experience to create a memory that will last forever, not just for me but for my children as well.”
Fortunately, ABC had enough restraint as to not flash a toll-free number below Spicer hoping to get some theme park bookings out of it.
The ratings were solid, though not quite as solid as the preliminary 1.1. After a downward adjustment, they pulled a 0.9 rating with a 4 share based on 6.61 million viewers. Even after the downward adjustment these are the strongest numbers the show has pulled this season since the premiere episode.
