This should be a highly competitive matchup between 14th place Burnley and 13th place West Ham United at Turf Moor on Saturday. Burnley is 3-3-5 on the year scoring 14 and conceding 18 but have a 3-0-2 record at Turf Moor scoring 8 and conceding 7. Away from home, things aren’t quite as rosy as Burnley is winless on their travels with a 0-3-3 record scoring 6 and conceding 11. West Ham United has had a little more good fortune away from home where they are 1-3-1 scoring and conceding 6. Overall, they’re 3-4-4 scoring 14 and conceding 17. In other words, we’ve got a very even matchup.
Neither side is in particularly good form at the moment and with the relegation zone looming so close for both sides that adds to the significance of this matchup. West Ham United has only 1 win in their last 8 in all competitions, beating Manchester United at home on September 22. During that stretch they’re 1-3-4 with their only non-EPL fixture a 4-0 thrashing at League One Oxford United in League Cup play. Their only Premiership win on the road this year was at lowly Watford on the opening day of the season though they followed that up with a win at Newport County in League Cup action. They’re since winless in 4 with a 0-2-2 record scoring just 2 and conceding 8.
Burnley has one win in five in Premier League play–a 1-0 home victory over Everton. They beat Norwich City at home two weeks earlier. Since the Everton win they’ve lost three straight to Leicester City, Chelsea and Sheffield United scoring 9 and conceding 3. In their past 20 home fixtures in all competitions they are 12-1-7. They’ve now won only 1 of their last EPL games. As you can see from their record they seldom play to a draw at home and typically beat the teams they ‘should beat’ and lose to superior competition. Given their struggles away from home, West Ham United falls into the ‘teams they should beat’ category.
