I almost didn’t bother doing odds on the forthcoming Season 40 of Survivor due to my general disgust with the state of reality TV. I get that the entire genre is a ‘work’ and that there’s only a veneer of legitimacy at best. My issue is that even in a predetermined, make believe world the competition has to adhere to whatever form of ‘logic’ they have created therein. If elimination from a show is final, for example, don’t come up with some gimmick to bring contestants back.
I’m at least cautiously optimistic that there will be no such nonsense on Season 40 of Survivor dubbed Winners at War. The entire theme of the show is ‘old school’. All 21 contestants are returnees from previous seasons and all of the challenges–at least according to the show’s majordomo Jeff Probst and challenge producers John Kirhoffer and Chris “Milhouse” Marchand.
Probst has announced a new type of in-game currency called ‘Fire Tokens’:
So how do the tokens play into the game? “Think of tokens as money,” Probst explains. “And the way it works is, everyone starts with one. And when you are voted out you have to will it or bequeath it to somebody still in the game as you head to the Edge of Extinction.” But while players still in the game are then gathering the fire tokens of those who are voted out, that doesn’t mean they have all the power. Rather, it gives the active players the opportunity to barter with those now on the Edge of Extinction.
Based on Probst’s explanation of some well known economic concepts like scarcity and supply/demand it could provide an interesting twist to the competition. He does make the case that it will add a ‘true economy’ to life on the island:
So now we have a true economy in which you have what I need, and I have what you want. And here’s the price and I’m offering to sell it to you.”
Will keep you posted on Probst’s chances to win the Nobel Prize for Economics. Here is the rundown of the official SPORTSINSIDER.COM Survivor: Winners at War betting odds for Episode 1:
