- BetOnline.ag has been finding creative events to add to the betting board with so many leagues on hiatus.1
- The BetOnline.ag Quarantine Challenge begins at 7 PM Friday on the Major League Eating YouTube Channel.
One recurring theme that we’ve hit over and over again during the Coronavirus pandemic sports shutdown is the creativity of the bookmaking industry. BetOnline.ag has been working overtime to keep the odds board full of wagering options for a (literally) captive public. As a result, we’ve seen a slew of entertainment and political betting options along with marble racing, virtual NASCAR and the NBA H-O-R-S-E Challenge.
The biggest event on the Friday ‘sports landscape’ is the BetOnline.ag Quarantine Challenge held under the auspices of the oldest and largest sanctioning body for feats of gastronomic strength and fortitude, Major League Eating.
The event is a ‘bracket style elimination eating tournament’ that will help fill the weekend sports void. There will be $11,500 in prize money at stake with $5,000 going to the winner. MLE and BetOnline.ag will also do some good with the event as they’ll donate $10,000 to hunger relief organization Feeding America. Major League Eating Chairman George Shea suggests that the rapid return of competitive eating is a ‘powerful statement of American resilience’:
“Competitive eating is most powerful when conducted on-stage in front of a large audience, but it is also one of the few sports that professionals can perform from the confines of their own home. While there has been substantial discussion about which professional sport would be the first to return – with baseball, basketball, golf and MMA all floating recent potential return plans – competitive eating is first to come back. It is a powerful statement of American resilience.”
THE BIGGEST NAMES IN COMPETITIVE EATING PROVIDE A UNIQUE BETTING OPPORTUNITY
The event will feature ‘eight top eaters’ competing via streaming video from their homes. The undisputed star of the show is Joey Chestnut who is essentially the Tiger Woods in his prime of competitive eating. Chestnut has won an unprecedented 12 of the last 13 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contests and is the odds on favorite to take down the victory in this event. He’s a -150 favorite at BetOnline.ag and with his ‘decade plus of domination’ in the annual Nathan’s event he’s obviously the man to beat.
Also in the field is Matt Stonie who has the distinction of being the only man to beat Chestnut in the Nathan’s event during the last 13 years. Stonie is a +500 third choice on the betting board and given the psychological edge provided by knowing that he’s beaten Chestnut before he might represent a good value. The second betting interest behind Chestnut is Darron Breeden priced at +400. Breeden is considered to be a future star in competitive eating and has not yet reached his prime.
There will be four rounds of competition each featuring a different food:
- First round: 2 pounds of bologna
- Quarterfinals: 48 Oreos and half gallon of milk
- Semifinals: 1.125 gallons (10 pounds) of baked beans
- Final: 10 Nissin chicken cup noodles
Here’s the schedule for the event with the start time for each round set for 7 PM Eastern/4 PM Pacific:
- April 17: First round
- April 19: Quarterfinals
- April 21: Semifinals
- April 22: Championship
