BetOnline.ag is continuing to find creative ways to add excitement and sports back into people’s lives during the coronavirus pandemic. This weekend’s featured competition – Major League Eating Quarantine Challenge.
The week-long event is a ‘bracket-style elimination eating tournament’ featuring 8 of the world’s fastest eaters from Major League Eating. The competitors will eat via live stream and will indulge in four different food challenges. The qualifying round, which consisted of two pounds of bologna, took place on Friday, April 17, thus establishing seeding for the future rounds. There is $11,500 in prize money at stake, with $5,000 going to the winner. MLE and BetOnline.ag are also donating $10,000 to hunger-relief organization Feeding America.
Major League Eating Chairman George Shea had a few words to say about his organization being the first to start back up:
“Competitive eating is most powerful when conducted on-stage in front of a large audience, but it is also one of the few sports that professionals can perform from the confines of their own home. While there has been substantial discussion about which professional sport would be the first to return – with baseball, basketball, golf and MMA all floating recent potential return plans – competitive eating is first to come back. It is a powerful statement of American resilience.”
Gideon Oji was an absolute monster in the qualifier round, upsetting favorite Joey Chestnut and the rest of the field to claim the #1 seed heading into the quarterfinal round. Sunday’s challenge will feature a 48 pack of Oreo cookies and a half-gallon of milk. The winner of each head-to-head matchup of the bracket will move on to the semifinal round next week.
