PGA Golf was one of the first sports to get back in action after a break forced by the COVID-19 pandemic and as a result has drawn very strong sports betting interest this year. The PGA Tour has been extremely proactive in their efforts to leverage sports betting and now they’ve got an ‘official betting operator’. BetMGM has signed a multi-year deal with the PGA Tour that will give them the aforementioned designation.
BetMGM will get the extensive exposure that the PGA Tour affords as well as the rights to use PGA Tour marks and advertise within its media and partner platforms. They also get intellectual properrty rights that will allow BetMGM to create pregame and postgame betting programming. The platform also gains the ability to distribute highlights to bettors. BetMGM has been very busy signing partnership deals this year and has previously announced relationships with the Denver Broncos, the National Lacrosse League, Yahoo Sports and Buffalo Wild Wings.
Norb Gambuzza, senior vice president of media and gaming for PGA Tour, said that the partnership with BetMGM will help the tour advance their sports betting strategy:
“BetMGM is part of a premium brand that is deeply connected to golf through sponsorship of various PGA TOUR players and tournaments. Through the power of the BetMGM brand and resources, this new relationship will help accelerate our sports betting strategy, and enable the TOUR to reach new fans and further engage current fans who enjoy betting on golf.”
Matt Prevost, BetMGM Chief Marketing Officer, is also excited to be working with the PGA:
“We look forward to working with the PGA TOUR to integrate great experiences for BetMGM customers. BetMGM’s advanced betting technology, combined with the PGA TOUR’s world-class competitions and iconic players, will not only advance the TOUR’s position at the forefront of professional sports, but the entire betting industry as well.”
In MGM Resorts’ July 30 earning call CEO Bill Hornbuckle reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sports betting through their investment in the BetMGM online/mobile platform:
“(These investments) demonstrates our continued commitment to positioning BetMGM as a leader in sports betting and iGaming. We believe BetMGM will allow us to more frequently engage with our guests and drive deeper loyalty to the MGM brand.”
Golf has enjoyed a decent following among sports bettors in recent years but has really seen a boost in its popularity with so many other sports on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
