The second episode of Dancing With The Stars Season 28 is in the books. Mary Wilson of The Supremes may be a legit legend from an iconic group but tonight she became the first contestant eliminated this season. She got screwed over by the new DWTS voting rules (more about those in a moment) but realistically speaking it’s tough to see a 75 year old going too deep into the competition even things were on the up and up. Wilson was far from the worst dancer in the field and although her scores were in the lower third of the competition table she was extremely capable. She put up a combined score of 32 good for 9th out of 12 contestants. In Week 1, she scored a 17 which put her in a fifth place tie for highest score. This week, she tied for the second lowest score. Somehow the lowest scoring contestant–former NBA forward Lamar Odom–was judged ‘safe’ and wasn’t up for elimination despite a cumulative score 9 points lower than Wilson’s.
Here’s how the new voting format works. As in the past, the eliminations are based on a combination of fan voting and the judges scores. The two lowest scoring contestants were ‘bottom two’ and the one with the lowest combined score got sent packing. Now, the process is even more arbitrary. The bottom two are determined from the fan voting and the judges scoring but now the judges make the final decision on who gets the boot. Another report suggested that the bottom two are determined entirely by fan voting but that doesn’t appear to be the case. This all assumes that you accept that the fan voting tabulations are legit, which I don’t. I’m of the opinion that they’re a complete ‘work. There’s no real tabulation process or transparency–the producers just send out the ‘two lowest scoring contestants’ and we presumably are supposed to accept that things are on the level. If it is on the level, it really screws over Ray Lewis since the show airs at the same time as Monday Night Football meaning NFL fans that would be predisposed to vote for him are likely watching the game.
Recent Bachelorette star and Alabama Crimson Tide fan Hannah Brown had the top score this week by a wide margin. She pulled a 24 with a surprise in second place as Kate Flannery improved dramatically from Week 1 to score a 21. James Van Der Beek, Ally Brooke and Kel Mitchell each came in with a 20. The bottom three were Ray Lewis and the eliminated Mary Wilson who each scored 15 and once again bringing up the rear Lamar Odom scored a 12. Maybe the judges are cutting Lamar some slack and he probably needs it. After he was found near death in a Nevada brothel he claims that he had ’12 strokes and six heart attacks’ so I guess my man is just lucky to be alive. He’s also suffering from short term memory loss (a drug overdose, coma, 12 strokes and six heart attacks will do that to you). Lamar actually showed some improvement week over week and that’ll keep him around if he can sustain it.
