Another MVP has been added to the Madden cover collection! Lamar Jackson is the newest NFL player to appear on the cover of the Madden NFL franchise. Game creator EA Sports released the trailer for the 2020 version of the Madden NFL franchise on Tuesday morning along with the announcement that Jackson would be the featured star in the new game and on its cover.
While the franchise has repeatedly gotten heat for not changing much of the gameplay for the better half of the past decade, the 2021 trailer seemed to preview better ball carrier control (could this be because of the Jackson cover?). It is currently available for pre-order, but the game is scheduled to make its release on systems August 28.
Lamar had this say about his lifelong dream:
“I grew up playing Madden and owned every copy I could get my hands on, so to be on the cover of Madden NFL 21 is a dream come true, especially when the cover represents so much of my story. The welcome to the Madden family from around the league and from fans has been phenomenal and I think people will have a lot of fun with the new features coming in this year’s game.”
So…the real question is…can Lamar stay clear of the Madden curse?
A longtime piece of Madden cover athletes has coincided with season-ending injuries the year they are placed on the cover. Last year’s cover star Patrick Mahomes was able to debunk that theory by winning Super Bowl LIV and earning Super Bowl MVP honors.
EA Sports and the Madden franchise just solidified a contract extension with the NFL to be the exclusive provider of the football video game market through the 2025 season and has the ability to extend through 2026. It will be available on the PS4 and Xbox One and will ultimately be available on the PS5, which was just announced to have a Holiday 2020 release last week.
