The biggest game of the English Premier League weekend takes place on Sunday as top of the table Liverpool travels to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea. Chelsea is finding some footing in Frank Lampard’s first season at the helm and are currently in a scrum with 8 points. Goal differential has been an issue due to a leaky defense and that has them in six place. Blues fans have to be happy that they have the same number of points as third place Tottenham Hotspur.
Liverpool has been perfect to date in Premiership play with a 5-0-0 record. Hard to ask much more of the team than 15 goals for and 4 goals against. They’re scoring an average of 3 per game and conceding less than a goal per contest. That’ll get it done no matter what soccer competition you’re playing in. They’ve been excellent away from home as well with a 2-0-0 record scoring 5 goals and conceding only 1. They’ve now won six straight away games in Premier League play.
Chelsea has been surprising feisty this year in what was supposed to be a ‘rebuilding season’ due to the transfer ban. The defense is still an issue and they’ve been surprisingly weak at Stamford Bridge. They’ve yet to win there under Lampard with a 0-2-0 record and they’re winless in their last 4 games at home. They’ve won just 1 of their last 6 at home and that is going to soon become a sore point with the Chelsea faithful.
No reason to get in front of this Liverpool freight train at this point though I do expect a spirited effort from the home side. Look for a high scoring affair with Liverpool emerging victorious.
