- This is the 38th season for CBS’s reality show.
- ‘Survivor’ was one of the early pioneers of the reality TV genre.
- ‘Survivor: Edge of Extinction’ Episode 12 airs May 1 at 8:00 PM Eastern.
If I’m ever in a position where I’m called upon to share my life wisdom with young people–a college graduation speaker, for example–I’ll very likely focus on this extremely important yet often overlooked lesson. DO NOT SELF GLOSS! This is true in all walks of life but particularly on reality shows. Sports radio icon Jim Rome first made me aware of this important rule of personal deportment and I have tried to share it with as many people as possible. It is in extremely bad form to give yourself a nickname. I don’t care what your friends, family, classmates, frat brothers, cellmate or whatever calls you. When you come into a new mileage you are ‘John Doe’ and not ‘Tubesteak Johnny Doe’.
I’ll share a personal anecdote. When I was in college I started my education at a small and prestigious Boston area school. After a couple of years there I decided I wanted to become an English Lit major and transferred to a large Southern state university. I was much more obnoxious then than I am now and decided that the best way to meet women was to go through fraternity rush. Obviously, I had no interest in joining a fraternity but I theorized that simply by attending the parties I could meet many of their sorority counterparts giving me instant entree to a circle of attractive women with lax moral standards. It worked like a charm but that’s not the point of this account.
While I was at a rush party the stereotypical pasty white yet red faced drunk chubby Southern boy came up on me and thrusting his hand out said ‘I’m Joe Smith (not his real name) but my friends call me Bubby Dennis’. My immediate thought was ‘I must not be your friend because I’m a grown man and I’m not going to address another grown man as ‘Bubby Dennis’. I vividly remember my reaction. I stepped back, gave him a quick head to toe assessment and sneered contemptuously. He didn’t catch on and soon moved on to regale other poor saps in attendance. He remained a target of my scorn during my entire college career.
THE BALLAD OF WARDOG
This brings us to the latest episode of Survivor: Edge of Extinction where the only ‘self gloss’ among the current group of castaways has been voted out..er…voted to go to Extinction Island. I speak of ‘Wardog’ Daniel DaSilva. Not to give away my trade secrets but no matter the reality show you can count on any ‘self glossed’ contestant to crash and burn. This usually happens quickly. I give you as an example Big Brother 20 where there were not only one but two self glossed contestants: Chris ‘Swaggy C’ Williams and Angie ‘Rockstar’ Lantry. Like ‘Wardog’, these contestants weren’t given their nicknames–they showed up to the party with them not unlike the ill fated Bubby Dennis. ‘Swaggy C’ was sent packing in Week 2 while ‘Rockstar’ hung around until Week 7.
We’re now deep into the season and only two contestants have been completely eliminated. Nine poor souls wait in limbo on Extinction Island. There’s got to be some serious activity in the weeks ahead as we’re now just three weeks from the finale (May 15). The website Reality Tea surmises that there will be five ‘main island’ contestants left heading into the finale. Through some sort of machinations one Extinction Island refugee will join them.
