There was a time when every US facing offshore sports book offered odds on ‘Survivor’. That’s no longer the case partially due to changes in the bookmaking industry and the declining popularity of reality TV (and broadcast TV in general). I’ve always enjoyed handicapping reality TV and other entertainment props so it’s been one of my goals to ‘pick up the slack’ and cover the betting aspects of reality TV shows.
‘Survivor’ is now in its 38th season and the current incarnation–‘Survivor: Edge of Extinction’ premiered last week (February 20, 2019). The way we do ‘Survivor’ odds is to start with the basic stuff and then add in more esoteric propositions once the audience begins to get to know the cast. We also post odds on the TV ratings which are still fairly strong for ‘Survivor’ and the other top reality TV shows.
In terms of its current popularity ‘Survivor’ is similar to ‘Dancing With The Stars‘. Many people react with surprise when they learn that the show is still on the air. Both ‘Survivor’ and ‘DWTS’ are no longer the focal point of office water cooler conversation and there’s not many ‘viewing parties’ these days. That notwithstanding, both shows bring in big numbers which is becoming more and more difficult in the increasingly fragmented media environment of the 21st century. For example, Episode 1 of ‘Survivor’s current season brought in a 1.6 key demographic rating with a 7 share. That’s roughly 7.75 million viewers which is an impressive aggregation of viewers in today’s broadcast environment. I haven’t seen the weekly ratings chart for last week but based on the previous week ‘Survivor’s’ 1.6 rating would have been good for 5th place.
Reality TV is one of the few remaining genres that the legacy networks can count on to deliver viewers. At least that is the case with the top reality TV shows like ‘Survivor’, ‘Dancing With The Stars’, etc. In the weekly TV ratings for February 11-17 the top two shows were reality based programming. ‘The Bachelor’ was second with a 1.9 rating and an 8 share with 6.48 million viewers. The breakout hit of the season is the bizarre singing competition called ‘The Masked Singer’ which last week delivered a 2.6 rating and 11 share with 8.22 million viewers.
Here is the first rundown of the official SPORTS INSIDER ‘Survivor: Edge of Extinction’ betting odds. We’ll keep these updated on a weekly basis and begin our recap and analysis of the episodes beginning next week.
